From 11–13 November 2025, Alan Yap, Ecological Consultant here at RSK Biocensus, successfully completed the hibernation module of the Class 2 Bat Licence training, an experience he described as both enjoyable and highly rewarding.

The module began with an in-depth presentation covering key aspects of bat hibernation ecology, including hibernation timings, roost requirements, survey methodologies, and essential safety considerations. This theoretical foundation set the stage for three days of hands-on fieldwork across a diverse range of hibernation sites.

The team visited a variety of roosts throughout the Mendip Hills, the Severn coast, and the area around Bath. These included tunnels, caves, mines, a sea cave, an icehouse, a grotto, and even a disused pumping house. Conditions were often challenging, tight spaces, low ceilings, and plenty of mud, but the opportunity to observe hibernating bats up close made every squeeze and scramble worthwhile.

Across the sites, the group recorded numerous greater horseshoe (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), lesser horseshoe (Rhinolophus hipposideros), and whiskered/Brandt’s (Myotis mystacinus / Myotis brandtii) bats. These sightings provided valuable experience in winter bat identification and reinforced the practical survey skills essential for licensed work.

Reflecting on the training, Alan said:
“Overall, I came away with much greater confidence in bat ID, survey techniques, and bat hibernation ecology, and I now feel much more comfortable with Class 2 licence methods. I am grateful to RSK Biocensus for sponsoring my attendance.”

Alan’s achievement highlights both his dedication to developing advanced bat survey skills and our continued commitment to supporting the training and professional growth of our team.
