A group of ecologists from our Hemel and Tonbridge offices convened in Kent for an in-depth dormouse training session, facilitated by our specialist Julie Powell. The event centered around the most recent updates to dormouse survey and licensing protocols in line with the newly issued 2025 mitigation guidelines.

Key discussion points included the major alterations to survey techniques and licensing processes, with a special focus on the newly launched Dormouse Habitat Suitability Assessment (HSA) proforma. Julie and the team examined how this tool can be effectively utilised in the field, emphasising essential elements such as identifying food-plant species, understanding habitat structure both horizontally and vertically, and recognising the significance of woodland management.

A thrilling aspect of the day was the practical fieldwork, where participants employed night vision cameras to look for small mammals in the nearby woodland. Although only one dormouse nest was found during the survey, the session offered invaluable insights and hands-on experience, enhancing our team’s grasp of the updated guidelines.

The training day has played a crucial role in improving the team’s understanding of the new regulations, ensuring they are well-prepared to apply the latest survey techniques and best practices for dormouse conservation.

This training represents a major advancement in our dedication to keeping up with industry standards and achieving the best possible results for both wildlife and our clients.
