Water safety is a critical skill, especially for teams working in environments where water hazards are a part of daily operations. Recently, our aquatic ecology team at RSK Biocensus attended the DEFRA Level 2 Water Safety Training run by Bristol Maritime, a programme designed to equip us with the knowledge and skills needed to operate safely in and around water.
Why Water Safety Training Matters
Working in or around water presents significant hazards, from strong currents and cold water shock to unpredictable environmental conditions. Proper training ensures that we can confidently assess risks, respond effectively in emergencies, and protect both ourselves and others.
The DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) Level 2 training is specifically designed for those who may need to work near or in water as part of their roles. It provides crucial hands-on experience, including:
Understanding water dynamics and hazards
Using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly
Performing rescues and self-rescue techniques
Assessing risks in real-world scenarios
What We Learned
The training reinforced the importance of preparation and situational awareness. Some key takeaways from our experience included:
Risk Assessment: Recognising potential hazards before entering a water environment is essential.
Practical Rescue Techniques: Knowing how to perform rescues safely without putting ourselves at risk.
Personal Safety: Using the right equipment and understanding the limits of personal capabilities in water.
The Impact on Our Work
This training is a vital investment in safety. By ensuring our team is well-trained and prepared, we can confidently carry out our work while minimising risks. Whether undertaking routine fieldwork or working in more challenging conditions, this knowledge could make the difference between a controlled situation and a critical emergency.
We’re proud to have completed this training and encourage all teams working near water to prioritise safety. Training saves lives, and the more we prepare, the safer we all are.
