Jared Sims from RSK Biocensus recently took part in a comprehensive two-day Beaver Ecology and Mitigation training course hosted by CIEEM and delivered by the Beaver Trust in Kent. The course was led by Ben, a senior member of the Beaver Trust team, and offered a deep dive into the growing field of beaver conservation and management in the UK.
Day 1: Ecology, History & Field Signs
The first day combined classroom learning with field-based training, covering the history of beavers in the UK, their distribution, and the increasing number of reintroduction efforts. Participants learned how to identify key field signs of beaver activity, gaining practical skills essential for ecological surveys and assessments. The day also included discussions around licencing requirements for beaver reintroductions, offering insight into the regulatory framework that supports their return to the British landscape.
Day 2: Mitigation, Licencing & Policy Alignment
On the second day, the focus shifted to mitigation strategies and the range of licences available for managing beaver impacts. The training highlighted the importance of aligning beaver management approaches with wider industry policies and environmental legislation, emphasising a collaborative and informed approach to conservation.
Reflecting on the course, Jared Sims said:
“Overall, it was a really interesting experience and will be extremely beneficial in the future, especially with the growing number of planned licensed beaver releases across the United Kingdom.”
With beaver reintroductions becoming an increasingly important part of landscape restoration, training like this ensures that ecologists and environmental professionals are equipped with the knowledge and tools to support their successful reintegration.
