Towards the end of February, RSK Biocensus proudly supported the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Youth in Nature Summit as one of nine ecological organisations represented at the Careers Fair. The two-day conference, organised by BTO Youth in collaboration with Green Jobs for Nature, took place at the David Attenborough Building (DAB) in Cambridge and brought together young people passionate about the natural world.

The programme featured a series of inspiring talks from conservationists and industry professionals, alongside interactive workshops that gave attendees valuable opportunities to network and gain practical careers advice.

Representing RSK Biocensus, Isabelle Turner and Alice Marlow spoke with aspiring wildlife professionals about careers in ecological consultancy and the diversity of projects that benefit from our work. They shared their own journeys into the sector and offered guidance on building ecological skills through volunteering and talked about the career opportunities available within RSK Biocensus.

The event was a show of the enthusiasm, commitment and depth of interest that young people have for nature and conservation. On her return, Alice said:

“It was great to join other wildlife professionals at the Careers Fair and chat to young wildlife enthusiasts about different pathways into the ecology sector as well as the range of projects we work on at RSK. It was also lovely to catch up with many of my fellow BTO Youth volunteers and staff team as well as attend some of the interesting talks”.

Brian Heppenstall, Education and Careers Manager at the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), later commented about the event:

“It was really nice to meet Isabelle and Alice, and good to see that they were so busy all day. It’s also so good to see consultancy featuring in an event that perhaps more traditionally it wouldn’t – as a viable career path. They were both great Ambassadors for the sector and for RSK. We really appreciate their time and I hope there’s an opportunity to collaborate again in the future.”

We are delighted that Isabelle and Alice had a great time at the event and are looking forward to supporting more events of this kind in the coming months.

At RSK Biocensus, we like to support careers in as many ways as we can. One of these ways is via the Green Jobs for Nature initiative. Green Jobs for Nature (GJfN) is a new campaign to make careers geared towards restoring and replenishing our natural environment more visible and achievable for all those thinking about their future work.

Whether a potential career changer or a young person thinking about what the future of their job might look like, this initiative aims to make it much easier to find out about the kinds of roles that exist, what they do, and how to get them.

One day, every job – whether it’s in building, transport, or retail – will need to be green. That means working in a way that protects the environment, using green technologies, and making a positive impact. Want to be ahead of the game? Now’s the time!
